Mark Fookin’ Day (take 1)

In today’s #PlayaTales, our hero does some ironic foreshadowing about a bald Scottish man…

For those of you who don’t know – Mark Day is a Scottish comedian and YouTuber. I have been watching his comedy and social commentary for years, until one day many years ago he announced he wasn’t going to be uploading as he was going to Burning Man. Turns out he had a second YouTube channel with his Burning Man videos going back to 1999. Today – Mark is more known for his “24 hours at Burning Man” videos… and I highly recommend you watch them if you haven’t (or are having seriously decompression issues).

While we were setting up (and before cell phone service became non-existent), Zebra got a message with a picture from our friend Agent Orange. Agent Orange had stopped in Gerlach (what passes for ‘civilization’ in Burning Man world) and who got out in front of him? Mark Fooking Day. And they snapped a picture together and for about 45 seconds – I really hated Agent Orange. What are the odds of 80,000 people, he would run into one that I have wanted to meet for years? But he is way too nice to hate on.

After three days of toiling… er… camp building and a day long white-out/dust storm on Sunday, that evening was time to get out of camp and explore the city while the gates were only just officially opening. So a group of us took off on foot and saw some awesome art.

While at one piece (the spinning wheel thing because if you saw it you know exactly which one I am talking about), Zebra grabs my arm and says “turn around” while actually turning me around. And standing behind me was Mark Day.

After a loving shove in his direction, I went up to him and told him I had been a fan even before knowing he was a Burner. I was trying to avoid my usual fan boy rambling that I ususally save for being around Wonderhussy. He smiled and said “I appreciate what you are saying, but I am really fooked up right now.” I apologized, shook his hand, and walked around in a daze (as I too was fooked up at the time).

But the story doesn’t end there… that was not the only time I would run into him… nor was that the only adventure that night… lots more stories to tell.

And we all know I tell a pretty good story…
